Controversial US Senator Is Headed Out
In his brief political career, Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) achieved several firsts, turning him into a conservative outcast. He was the first Republican to support the “Never Trump” movement, for example, months before anyone else. He was also the first Republican senator to publicly oppose moves to challenge the results of the 2020 Electoral College and to advocate for the impeachment of former President Donald Trump following the rioting on Capitol Hill on January 6. In a recent development, he is leaving Washington, DC, possibly permanently.
Sasse’s appointment as the next president of the University of Florida was authorized on November 9 by the Florida Board of Governors, which is in charge of the state’s higher education system (UF). Sasse was chosen as the 13th president of the institution by the board of trustees without dissent.
The trustees complimented Sasse’s academic background and writings that have been published. They were noticeably silent, however, when it came to his political career, which included his 13 months as the previous President George W. Bush’s Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation and his nearly eight years in the Senate.
According to POLITICO, Sasse will start serving as the president of the University of Florida on February 6. The senator tweeted that he will be leaving office in January.
